Pumpkin Festival Sweeties

In the world of Harvest Moon, the Pumpkin Festival is an opportunity for children and all others who love sweets to consume them to excess. In FoMT/MFoMT, in fact, if you enter the house at any point in the afternoon on 30 Autumn, your spouse will waylay you and force you to join your family for a feast of sweets. Your character will be so overcome with the effects of his/her gluttony that he/she will be unable to return to work afterwards! When a good friend (and fellow Harvest Moon/Rune Factory player) sent me a very generous portion of Fudge with his own Recipe for my Birthday, I knew I had to feature the Recipe somewhere on my Harvest Moon Cooking Site.

Initially, I could not think of a Fudge Dish in any Harvest Moon game. Then I remembered the Pumpkin Festival! Mars-Frog's Fudge is a perfect offering for the traditional Pumpkin Festival celebrations. Rich, sweet and delectably smooth, any one who loves sweets is certain to enjoy it. It is not Chocolate Fudge, but rather Peanut Butter Fudge.

The photograph shows the magnificent Fudge guarded rather appropriately by a Chipsqueek from Rune Factory 2, as Chipsqueeks love anything that contains nuts. The wonderful Birthday card from Mars is included in the picture.

Harvest Moon and Rune Factory Cooking in the Real World

Harvest Moon and Rune Factory have created a detailed universe that combines elements both of Japanese and Western culture. This may be most apparent in the realm of Cooking, where the 'traditional' assortment of Recipes both in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory include both French-inspired dishes such as Gratin and Doria and Japanese Rice Cakes and Sashimi.

I realised that many players may be familiar with some of these Dishes ONLY through Harvest Moon and Rune Factory and that it might be interesting to create a website for real Recipes for Harvest Moon and Rune Factory favourites. This site is the result.

It was only when I created a link list of all the Recipes and Cookbook Guides that I have made for the various Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games I have covered that I saw how much time and effort is invested in Cooking both in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory.

The World of Cooking in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory

On the right side of this page, you will find links to all the Recipes & Cookbook Guides I have created for various Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games over the past few years. The sheer number of these very specific guides provide a clue as to the importance of Cooking in the world(s) of Harvest Moon and Rune Factory.

Although Cooking is a vital aspect of most Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games, each game is unique in its approach and in the actual Recipes that can be learned or made. Certain Dishes tend to appear again and again, but others may be limited to a single game.

In Rune Factory games, Cooking is not restricted to edible items but embraces Weapons/Tools made at a forge, Accessories/Equipment made at a Workbench and Medicine/Farm Aids made in a Laboratory. You therefore will find 'Recipes' for the Forge, Workbench and Laboratory in my Rune Factory Recipes Cookbook Guides as well as all Kitchen Recipes.

Your success or failure in the Kitchen may depend upon different variables in each game. In some games, it is simply a matter of finding the right ingredients. In others, your experience and Skill Levels in the Kitchen will influence the probability of success. Rune Factory has made Cooking more 'interactive'. In Rune Factory 2, your character attends lessons in School to learn Recipes. In Rune Factory Frontier, there is a cooking gauge and if your character does not respond at the right moment, the result will be a Failed Dish.
In some games, including FoMT/MFoMT, there are 'Basic Recipes' that contain the fewest number of possible ingredients as well as the 'Best Recipes' containing optional ingredients. The ingredients used will affect the amount of Stamina and Fatigue Recovery that the Dish will have. In other games, you cannot experiment with the actual list of ingredients but you can make 'better' Dishes by using higher levels of each item.

Cooking almost always is associated with Energy in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory and Energy is fundamental to farming and combat and indeed any activities your character may pursue. There is another important component to Cooking in most of the games, which is related to gift-giving. Raising the Love or Friendship Levels of other characters is one of your goals in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory, even if those efforts cannot lead to an actual marriage. Cooked Dishes tend to be the Most Favourite Gifts for many characters. In those games where your character can marry and have a child, Cooking can mean the difference between an early acceptance of a marriage proposal and a prolonged life as a single individual.

It is possible that in real life, as in Harvest Moon and Rune Factory, making some of the Recipes published here can advance your social life as well! Certainly good food is one of the simple pleasures in life, even if its preparation can be complicated on occasion.
